Remember the winter luau in the quad? Don Rice tells us:

I just got a PHS77 home movie digitized and posted it to my internet iDisk. It's the film study class movie I made with Bruce Handelman - remember the winter luau in the quad? Maybe there are other movies out there too!

Go to http://homepage.mac.com/donrice1/

and download the file luau_PHS1977.mov

The film once had a soundtrack and narration by Bruce Handelman, which is now lost. It's possible that Bruce might have it somewhere. Bruce?

Terry (Hillmer) Waite writes:

Hello friends. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the 30th Reunion but will be thinking of you. My family and I will be vacationing on Cape Cod . It is hard to believe that time has marched on from 1977. Attached is a recent photo of me and my daughter Cally, 11 years old and Megan 13 years old at Marconi Beach on the National Seashore. Not pictured are my husband Steve and my 15 year old son Dan.

Pictured by mistake, unknown black bathing beauty to the left and her husband’s chest centered in our photo. Oh well.

Having a good life in Central Massachusetts. Wishing you all happy times together and beyond.

Alyson Burks tells us:

Despite the begging from Terry Hilmer, I won't be making the reunion. Every year this weekend my family descends on me to visit the beach and celebrate my mom's birthday. And besides, I still have vivid memories of the worst hangover of my life from our 10th year reunion.

Quick catch up: After graduating from Wittenberg (with Patty Fields), I moved to Boston and spent several years in retail before I got smart and moved to the sales side. Moved back to Roch for 2 years (1989-91) then to Cincinnati then back to Boston's south shore. Got married (got divorced), no kids, no dog, just a free agent. I see my good friend Terry as often as possible (which isn't often enough especially considering there are only 60 miles between us) and we had dinner with Deb Pike in March. Don't get back to Roch cha cha as my folks now live in Florida but did get to see Ellen "Huss" Kussie a few summers ago when her mom passed away.

Observations: Helen and Jerry were meant for each other and have to win best looking couple award. Is Jerry still as funny as ever? Of course I don't recall Helen being a straight man. Is Peter Bilious looking for a skiing partner in Australia? Because I'm available if you could only forget that incident in the caferia in 5th grade. Kim Nielsen - can you refresh my memory and tell me what "Q" girls stands for if it's fit for print. I had a Missy Farone siting at a little shop here in Scituate and was convinced there was no way it could be her - will have to "introduce" myself next time. Heidi Bush - I heard you were working for Timberland at one point and as I sat on a plane and looked at the guys paperwork sitting beside me I realized he worked for them as well and I asked about you but you had just left the comapny. Where are you now?

Is anyone elses memory as bad as mine? I'm convinced I didn't go to school with half the people who have posted on this site.

Judi Paul Carroll writes:

Well I haven't gone far since 1977. I just had my 25th anniversary working in the Penfield School District. I was the "attendance lady" at the PHS for 20 years and then decided to move down to elementary and have been the school secretary for the past 5 years at Harris Hill and currently at Indian Landing. I don't have any children of my own so I have had the pleasure of being "motherly" to the many students I have know over the years.

My husband Kevin and I have been married for 21 years and live in Palmyra.

I will be at the reunion and am looking forward to catching up with everyone.

Lynne (Rowley) Holton tells us:

I haven't been back to Rochester in years, but I do wish I could be there for the reunion. It looks like a great turnout!

After Penfield, I went to Williams College, then to law school in NYC. I hated NYC (sorry all you Big Apple fans!) so on a whim I took a job in Winston-Salem, NC - when I drove there I had no idea where it was. Believe it or not, I met my husband Walter studying for the bar exam. We have been married for 20 years and have 4 children - Cara - age 17, James - age 15, Sammy - age 11 and Mary - age 2. It is a little strange having one going to college and another going to "Mother's Morning Out!"

I still practice law - primarily commercial and residential real estate. I work with my husband - check out the firm at www.walterholton.com. We spend all the time we can at Wrightsville Beach, NC. I can no longer find my PHS yearbooks so have been enjoying all the e-mail updates on class members.

My daughter is looking at some colleges in NY so maybe I will be able to get back soon.

I have attached a photo of the family - it's 2 years old, but it is also the most recent one I have with all 6 of us in it!

Have a great time,

Tim Koletic had his arm twisted:

OK, I’m in. I’ve yielded to that persistent purveyor of all things Penfield (and I hear a damn fine pool player) Andy Pulsifer and decided to join the aged invaders and time crusaders for one more saunter down Amnesia Lane – which is where I hear they keep the fountain of youth and other great lies.

Despite the years since we wondered out of Eastman Theatre educated and immortal and all the intervening balding, fattening, flattening, and graying, that’s occurred, reading what you’ve been up to is more fun (and interesting) than I would have thought or cared to admit. Paul Jordan nailed it! So heck, why not contribute to the compendium of Penfield profiles and pound out a few lines about how I, like many of you, have been growing older but not up these past 30 years.

After the entire Koletic brood migrated to Tampa in the summer of ’79, and after spending far too much time ashore at the Port of Indecision pondering such cruel realities as the end of spring break, low tide, and other things not suited for a family publication I somehow managed to not only graduate from the University of Georgia, but woo a fantastic lady who had the decency to marry beneath her (Kim – yeah, it rhymes, so?), and together we’ve happily careened from one great adventure to the next – starting with marriage 21 years ago (looks longer in print) then fun jobs with too much travel around the country, the Caribbean and Central America – cool places to be sure, but missed too many little league games; though somehow I was home enough to wind up with three boys (12, 15, 16) that are into girls, football, baseball, music, adventure, and the not-so-little devils manage to work in a little school (more than I did!) when they aren’t tormenting their mother about some kind of teenage crisis usually involving girls, cars, often both – fumes disease. The yoke of responsibility, I swear it’s why God invented fishing (which I don’t do as often as necessary, but as often as possible. “Yes, dear, I’m pulling anchor now.” Don’t tell Kim but there’s always time for one more cast!) Career’s been a blast – commercial real estate, in development & finance roles, am now with Wrightwood Capital – a national, private structured finance platform principaling value creation transactions primarily through structured debt, equity and other stuff requiring a new vocabulary.

This reunion thing is a weird place to be…think about it: priceless opportunity to travel great distances to nonchalantly squint at name badges of people you can no longer recognize, tell embarrassing stories about events you’d like to forget, in places you vaguely recall…good thing it’ll be dark and the bar is open late!

Cheers,
Tim

Steve Franklin tells us:

Sorry I can’t make the re-union, but I am scheduled to run a pair of soccer camps in West Virginia and then Ohio. Over the past thirty years (WOW), I have traveled to Northern Wisconsin to attend Northland College. My roomie at that time was Steve DeWaters. I received a B.S. in Secondary Education. Never used though as I jumped right into the coaching field. Coach women’s volleyball and basketball for ten years prior to moving down to Bloomington, IN. Received my masters while serving as an Assistant Coach on the much heralded Indiana University soccer program where we made it to the 1994 NCAA Championship. Since that time I have relocated to Indianapolis, IN where I currently coach the Men’s Soccer program at IUPUI – an NCAA Division I program. This will fall will mark my 13th year in Indy and 26th in the coaching field. Anyone visiting Indy (for a auto race – you know the Indy 500 or NASCAR Brickyard 400) is welcome to stop by. Feel free to contact me with any news or just to keep in touch. Here is a recent photo from a camp with US Soccer legend Mia Hamm.

Kim Bartholomew (Nielsen) writes:

Hi everyone,

I wish I could make it to the reunion but we had planned a trip to Virginia during the same time….I know all of you are going to have a great time!!!

Just a quick update of my last 30 years….
Graduated from SUNY at Cortland in 81 and got a job at a small college in southern Maine coaching field hockey, and running the sports medicine dept. Needless to say, I fell in love with Maine and have not left. After working in the sports medicine field for a couple of years, I realized I wanted to get back into education. I started working at Windham High School (near Sebago Lake ) back in 84 and have been teaching Health and Physical Education (and a variety of other things!!). Can’t believe I am entering my 24th year. To keep active, I have been running, biking and skiing in the winter.

As far as family…Ralph and I married in 1986 and we have two great daughters (and 2 stepsons from Ralph’s previous marriage). My oldest is Alyse (18) and she just graduated from HS (see picture) and Emma just turned 12 and is going in to 7th grade. We have 2 grandchildren from Ralph’s oldest son. I guess that makes me a grandmother (I still think I am too young!!!).

I was back in Penfield last summer visiting my sister who still lives in East Rochester . I wish the reunion was last year because I would have been able to make it. I tried looking up a few people when I was back, with no success….If anyone has heard or talked to Lynne Zeinglein, Leanne Reed, Lorrie Turley, Ellen Kussie, Terry Hilmer or any of the other “Q” girls, let me know….I would love to re-connect.

I would love to hear from anyone and can’t wait to hear about the reunion!!

My e-mail address is kbarthol~at~maine.rr.com. Please add me to the list!!

Thanks to all to make this reunion and Web page successful!!

The next time you're sitting at work, staring at the clock or dealing with some wacko client, think of Peter Bilous jumping out of a helicopter and free skiing the New Zealand alps, or windsurfing the day away...

"Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it. I did manage to get back to Rochester about a month ago for 8 days to help out my aging Dad. Lynda Thon-Koehler writes:

I can’t believe it’s going to be 30 years from PHS….

My family is living in Hornell NY. My husband Chris has been with the Allegany ARC since 1983, and currently holds the VP of Marketing position. Daughter #1 (Kristen, 24) is planning her wedding for Sept 22, 2007 while working as an In-School Counselor with the Concern for Youth program. Daughter #2 (Katie, 21) is a senior at SUNY Brockport, graduating with her Bachelors Degree in Arts for Children, and onto grad school next Fall to become an elementary school teacher. My son (Christopher, 17) is graduating from high school in June, planning to attend college to become a Phys Ed teacher. Incidentally, Christopher was one of the Varsity captains on the Hornell High football team, who just lost a Section V title to a much better team (Geneva) last week at PaeTec Park.

I still have ties to PHS; my brother Jeff’s kids attended – two have graduated and Emily, is a Junior this year. Emily has been tearing up the turf as I read about her in the D&C, and saw her on the news this morning scoring a hockey goal for PHS!

I’ve been in the Human Resource field for the past 12 years; I’m currently running a small staffing agency in the Southern Tier, which keeps me very busy. The only good part of growing older, I’m realizing, is that I only have to work 18 more years to retire …. Depending on this election!

Thanks for your time in organizing for all of us. Holler if I can help in any way.

Update from Paul Jordan

I won’t be coming to the reunion due to a prior commitment but thought I’d play along and send a pic and note. I can’t think of what my fellow ’77 classmates would like to know less – the recipe for smoked groundhog jalapeno sausage or what I’ve been up to for 30 years.

The condensed version: SUNY Geneseo, U of R, a lot of traveling and too many years in software development showing bits and bytes who’s boss ate up approximately 10 years and took an equal amount off my life expectancy.

Started with a small manufacturing company in ’90, bought the place in ’96 and now run Jordan Products (dba Rol-Tru Bearings and Dell Tool). We design and manufacture parts that move paper through machines – copiers, checkwriters, printers, postage machines, etc. I’m also the guy behind Websportsphoto, a sports photography business, which I do when my real job gets to be just too much darn fun.

Married going on 20 years. Daughter, son and dad all heavily into lacrosse, daughter at Mercy, son still at Indian Landing. I run Penfield Youth Lacrosse, coach several youth lacrosse teams and help coach men’s lax at MCC. I am also the dude behind www.penfieldlacrosse.org. I still play on an old/bald/fat farts team which travels to tournaments all over, mostly to have dinner, drink and tell stories with old friends.

I am balder and fatter than the enclosed picture, yup I am a real catch in my late 40’s. Still live in Penfield, not far from your master of communications, Andy Pulsifer. I would have to work on my “blank stare while pretending I recognize you while looking at your nametag” if I ever did attend a reunion since in all honesty I no longer recognize a large portion of the names on our class list. I’m pretty sure my yearbook never made it past a game of bizz buzz in 1978 so that is of no help.

Ah well, I do wish you all well in your endeavors and would not admit it but do get a kick out of hearing what you all have been doing.

Have fun at the reunion, I’ll be off coaching my son’s team at yet another lacrosse tournament.

Update from Michelle Ouellette Tuyn

Hi all. I can't believe I live 10 minutes from the party but can't make it. What's up with that?! Anyway, for an update.

Wow. Where to begin. After several careers (more like jobs really) and mucho years of night school, I have finally settled into a career teaching Social Studies at Webster Schroeder High School. Better late than never. I've been married almost 23 years and my husband, Richard, and I adopted a beautiful baby boy who will be 9 in a couple of weeks. The picture attached is a little old (Ben was 3 at the time), but the recent stuff isn't here at home. Anyway, everyone have a blast at the reunion and hopefully, if I plan better, I can make 35. I still don't think we're old enough for 30 anyway!

If you get a chance and want to say hi, you can e-mail me at sailingtuyns~at~juno.com.

PHS '77 Paula Santirocco Principal Flutist, Cleveland, Ohio, writes:

A quick summary of the last 30 years isn't easy, but here are the basics.

After finishing school at Baldwin-Wallace College and getting my Master's at Eastman, I had a 20-plus year career playing the flute in the Cleveland area, as Principal Flute in the Cleveland Ballet, Cleveland Opera, and Ohio Chamber Orchestra. I also did a lot of freelance playing, notable the touring Broadway shows which came into town. The exact totals escape me now, but I know I played The Nutcracker over 500 times, and over the course of 2 tours I played Phantom of the Opera well over 100 times. Playing in the orchestra for the Three Tenors was particularly thrilling. I soloed with the Ohio Chamber Orchestra several times but my biggest "goosebump" thrills happened playing for the Cleveland Opera. I experienced total burnout around the year 2000, and hung up my solid gold flute before I missed seeing my son grow up.

Tyler is now 17 and I'm married to Bill Goddard, a photographer. Leaving the orchestras gave me the opportunity to paint, which I had been wanting to do for years. I also make jewelry. You can see my work at www.paulasgallery.com. I'm represented by a gallery in Columbus.

I miss home like crazy. I'm considering getting a place in the Rochester area so I can be near my family and be part of the arts community there. It would be great to renew Penfield friendships, too!

Cheers,
Paula

Jerry Hill & Helen Trohanowsky are one of four Penfield '77 intraclass marriages (Can you guess the other 3?)

Jerry writes:
30 years in less than one paragraph: After college while Helen was living in NYC , I connected with her while on several business trips and we were married in 1985. We lived in Washington DC, Detroit (Grosse Pointe) & Reno/Tahoe while I was working for Gannett and Helen was in the Mortgage Banking Industry. In 1993 our "twosome" expanded to three with the arrival of our son Ryan who is now 14 yrs old. In 1998 I went to work for Hearst at the San Francisco Chronicle and we moved to San Francisco (Marin County) and we thought we would stay there forever. In 2004 the Times lured us from the San Francisco Bay to Tampa Bay. I am still doing the newspaper circulation and marketing gig and Helen is juggling our son's busy schedule and a career with Ann Taylor. That's our story. Jerry & Helen

Liz Tryon Hupp writes:

After graduation, I left the Penfield area to attend Houghton College for two and a half years, then left for health reasons. But my heart stayed behind with my freshman chemistry lab assistant; we married a year later in 1980. I got an Associates Degree from Houghton in 1983. After Joe finished his Chemistry PhD and post-doc, we ended up at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in 1986. We had twin boys in 1988, David and John.

When they began preschool, I went back to school (over the next 8 years) for a BA in Early Childhood Education and Human Development, graduating from National-Louis University in 2000. (During that time I also earned a deputy black belt in TaeKwonDo.)

Beginning in my late 20's, I experienced a slow progressive loss in my hearing. It took a major dive in 2001. I began teaching at a Montessori school that mainstreams deaf and hard of hearing students using Cued Speech (www.agbms.org). My hearing continued to drop, and in March 2006 I received a cochlear implant in my left ear. o I am now truly a "Bionic Woman"--move over Lindsey Wagner!! (learn more about CI's at bionicear.com; my CI journey is on my blog at Liz.Hupp.com)

Joe is still a chemistry professor at Northwestern University (http://chemgroups.northwestern.edu/hupp/index.html). He travels a lot professionally and I have had the opportunity to join him for trips to Italy, Scotland, France, and even a 3 month sabbatical in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

The attached family picture is from Christmas 2005--almost current. (Yes, my kids have more hair than I do...) My husband and I are planning to be at the PHS77 dinner on July 28th, combining it with a visit with family still in the Rochester area. See you then!

Hello to PHS Classmates of 1977!
I look forward to our reunion in July and being able to catch up with many of you in person. In the meantime, since graduating from college, I have been working & living in New York City. For most of that time, I have been involved in the Apparel Industry. I have been in sales, brand & licensing development with companies such as: Disney, Warner Bros, Timberland, Maidenform & Calvin Klein (to name a few!).

Although I travel quite a bit for work, I have also managed to travel for pleasure to many memorable locations. A few of those have included: climbing along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, reaching the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa and diving in the Indian Ocean in Bali. Exploring different places & cultures has truly been a passion I've enjoyed over the years.

I married in Oct 2004, to a wonderful man- who happens to be from Rochester. So yes, we have one of those "commuter marriages". We work apart during the week, and either spend weekends in NYC or Rochester (or somewhere visiting family!). My husband & I enjoy sailing, diving, hiking & travel whenever possible. I have 2 terrific stepsons- one in Wash DC, the other in Florida. I have attached a picture below of my family- The McCandless's.

All in all, my life has been truly blessed with wonderful family, friends and adventure.
Cheers!

Yes, I DO plan to come to the reunion in July!!! By the time of the reunion, I will be married to my wife Joy for 27 years. We have four daughters 23, 19, 17 & 13. I work for LUK Oil / Getty Petroleum at their heating oil and Propane distribution in Kingston, N.Y. I have worked for the company 28 years. I began as a tanker driver in my first few years, was then trained and worked in heating service and heating system installation as a technician which then developed into a heating sales position. For the past 13 years I have worked my way into a senior management position overseeing the service and sales staff of our company, which supplies heating oil and service to nearly 30,000 customers.
